Vitamin D is steadily gaining visibility in the media and among more medical advisors as the lives of people show sometimes dramatic improvement by simply getting adequate levels of vitamin d.

Recently I read of a Minnesota woman who complained about a complete loss of energy. Initially doctors thought the cause was related to a past injury. She complained of poor sleep, and difficulty doing simple tasks such as sweeping the floor or getting dressed.

Finally her doctor suggested she may have a vitamin d deficiency. Vitamin d is produced by exposure to sunlight but many people use sunscreen that blocks the needed sunlight and those living in northern states such as Minnesota lack enough exposure to sunlight even during the summer months.

At first, this woman dismissed the suggestion that vitamin d could help but when her health dramatically improved and she found herself with energy and a returning physical strength, she became a believer.

Testing has confirmed that vitamin d levels have dropped dramatically over the past 20 years and more vigorous steps need to occur to restore proper levels. Since Vitamin d receptors are located on just about every tissue of our bodies including skin, brain, kidneys, lings, heart and muscles, the need for vitamin d should not be viewed as a passing nutritional fad.

Without vitamin d our overall health can be severely impacted. Not only does it support our energy levels and moods but can affect people with chronic pain and diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

In the world we live in today, the only sure way to get adequate levels of vitamin d is to take a high quality supplement.

Many medical professionals are still unsure what levels of vitamin d to recommend but most agree that government recommend daily dosages of 400 IUs is not sufficient. Some are now recommending 2000 to 5000 IUs as a daily dosage.

Have your vitamin d checked by your doctor as a first step to better health.
